More elaborate or sophisticated than vagueness, and certainly more fluent, is frankness—which, on the face of it, sounds like the opposite of vagueness.

In fact, frankness is merely vagueness in disguise. The person comes across as forthright and forthcoming, but, at the same time, is not telling the whole truth. Instead, she is carefully ‘editing’ her account, omitting the bits, often about herself, that she finds most difficult to accept or tolerate; and then distracting from those missing bits with what seems like a complete, confident, and convincing account of the matter in hand. The best place to hide, it is said, is in the middle of the crowd.

This is by no means malicious. Like every ego defence, frankness is an entirely unconscious process, with the primary aim of deceiving not others but the self.

Frankness is one reason, probably the most important reason, why stories have many sides.
